Privacy Policy
Koffeeyap ("we," "us," "our") is a Calgary-based service that introduces people for one-on-one, platonic coffee meetups. This Privacy Policy explains what personal information we collect, why we collect it, how we use and share it, and the choices you have. It applies to our website, waitlist, matching forms, and any related services (the "Service").
We comply with Alberta's Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) and Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), as applicable.
1. What We Collect
Information you give us directly:
- Waitlist signup: your email address.
- Matching profile: your first name, age range, gender, the general area of Calgary you live in, your availability, your interests and conversation topics, your matching preferences (including who you are comfortable being matched with), and a short self-description.
- Feedback: anything you share with us after a meetup (for example, whether you'd like to meet your match again).
- Communications: emails or messages you send us.
Information collected automatically:
- Basic website analytics (via Google Analytics), such as pages visited, approximate location at the city level, device and browser type. This data is aggregated and is not used to identify you personally.
We do not collect payment information (the Service is free), government ID, photos, or precise location data.
2. Why We Collect It
We collect and use your information to:
- Match you with another user — this is the core purpose of the Service;
- Contact you about your match, your meetup, and the Service (including launch updates);
- Improve how matching and the Service work;
- Keep the Service safe, including investigating complaints and removing users where necessary;
- Meet our legal obligations.
We will not use your information for purposes beyond these without telling you and, where required, getting your consent.
3. How We Share It
With your match. This is the part that makes Koffeeyap work, so we want it to be completely clear: when we match you with another user, we share parts of your profile with them — your first name, general area of the city, interests, and availability — and we facilitate an email introduction between you. We do not share your email address with anyone other than your match as part of that introduction, and we never share your last name, exact address, or anything you haven't provided for matching purposes.
With service providers. We use trusted third-party tools to operate the Service (for example: website hosting, form and database services, email delivery, and Google Analytics). These providers process data on our behalf and are not permitted to use it for their own purposes. Some providers may store data outside Canada (for example, in the United States); where that happens, your information is subject to the laws of those jurisdictions.
If required by law. We may disclose information if required by law, court order, or to protect the safety of our users or the public.
We do not sell your personal information. Ever. We also do not share it with advertisers.
4. Consent
By signing up and checking the agreement box on our forms, you consent to the collection, use, and sharing of your information as described in this Policy — including the sharing of profile information with your match.
You can withdraw your consent at any time by contacting us (see Section 9). Withdrawing consent means we can no longer match you, and we will remove you from the Service.
5. How Long We Keep It
We keep your information for as long as you are part of the Service, and for a reasonable period afterward as needed for legitimate purposes (such as records of complaints or removals). If you ask us to delete your information, we will do so within 30 days, except where we are required or permitted by law to retain it (for example, records related to a safety incident).
6. How We Protect It
We take reasonable steps to protect your information, including limiting access to it, using reputable providers with industry-standard security, and collecting only what we need. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to keep your information safe and will notify you and the relevant authorities of any breach involving your personal information where the law requires it.
7. Your Rights
You may, at any time:
- Access the personal information we hold about you;
- Correct information that is inaccurate;
- Delete your information and leave the Service;
- Withdraw consent to further use of your information;
- Ask questions or complain about our privacy practices.
To exercise any of these rights, contact us at the email below. We will respond within 30 days. If you are not satisfied with our response, you may contact the Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Alberta.
8. Children
The Service is for adults 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If we learn that we have, we will delete it.
9. Contact / Privacy Officer
The person responsible for privacy compliance at Koffeeyap is its founder. For any privacy questions, requests, or complaints, contact: koffeeyap@gmail.com
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Policy from time to time. Material changes will be posted on our website with a new "Last updated" date and, where appropriate, sent to you by email. Continued use of the Service after changes take effect means you accept the updated Policy.
