A short history of why coffee is the answer

For nearly 500 years, coffee has brought people together around the world.

The first coffeehouses opened in Mecca in 1555. Known as Kaveh Kanes, they offered something new. For the price of a cup, anyone could sit together. Rich merchants, poor scholars, and strangers. People who would never share a room shared a table.

By the 1600s, London called them Penny Universities. For just a penny, you could buy coffee and join lively conversations. You might meet a future stockbroker, a philosopher, or a stranger. Jonathan's Coffee House became the London Stock Exchange. Lloyd's became Lloyd's of London. In Paris, Café de Procope welcomed Voltaire, Rousseau, and Franklin week after week.

The Enlightenment didn't just happen at desks. It happened over coffee.

Researchers have a name for what's missing. According to a 2018 Kansas study, it takes 50 hours to become casual friends and 90 to become close. As a kid, you collected those hours. As an adult here, you have to make them.

How it works

Signing up takes about two minutes. You fill out a short form on our site with your name, email, and a few interests. You can also let us know if you're more comfortable speaking in a language other than English, or if you'd prefer a match who shares your language. Our team reviews your submission and hand matches you with someone we think you'll genuinely click with. When your match is ready, we pick the café, confirm a time that works for both of you, and send the details. All you do is show up.

You get a structured hour with someone else looking for a real connection. No swiping. No online profiles. No awkward scheduling. Just a personal match and a genuine conversation at a local independent café in Kensington, Bridgeland, Mission, Inglewood, or Marda Loop. All of the cafés we're picking are easily accessible by public transit, and most have step-free entry or accessible washrooms to accommodate people with mobility needs. If you have specific accessibility concerns, let us know and we will match you to a suitable location.

Built for trust

Every meetup happens at a public café we've vetted. Before you arrive, both people receive a first name and a description of where to meet. Our team is reachable by phone during your meeting if anything feels off. We also use a one-strike removal policy. If a member behaves inappropriately, they're removed from the platform and not matched again.

The details

You cover your own coffee at the café. The match itself is what Koffeeyap charges for. Founding members get their first two matches free, and after that, each match has a small per-match fee that goes toward keeping the matchmaking human.

There's no minimum and no cap on how often you can come back. Some people do one match a month to keep it light. Others request a new match every couple of weeks while they build a real circle. You decide the pace. Right now, all our meetups are thoughtfully matched one-on-one so you can have a real conversation and get to know someone new. In the future, we may offer group meetups for those who prefer a small group setting. If you would like to be notified when group options are available, let us know when you sign up.
